Key finding

Across 211 LinkedIn posts from one team, lead-magnet posts earned a median of 78.5 comments against 1 for standard posts, and the direction held in all four accounts with enough posts of both kinds to compare within one author.

What we measured

A lead-magnet post offers a resource and asks readers to comment a keyword to get it. A standard post just says something. The format war between the two runs on anecdotes, so this study measures both from the same team over the same period.

The dataset is one workspace, our own: about 10 Reachium team accounts publishing through the platform's content engine. Of the 211 posts they published, 182 were lead-magnet posts and 29 were standard posts, which is itself a finding about what this team believes works. What happens to those comments afterwards, from keyword to DM to booked meeting, is a companion study; this one stays on the posts themselves.

Methodology

Dataset window. 211 published posts, 12 November 2025 to 5 August 2026, pulled 6 August 2026. Classification comes from the platform's own post records: a post is a lead-magnet post if it was created with a comment-keyword trigger attached.

Headline cohort. The full series, 182 vs 29, because the comparison needs every standard post it can get. Both groups contain young posts still accruing, which biases both medians down but does not favour either side. A matured-only consistency check (posts at least 30 days old at the pull: 118 vs 14) is reported below.

Metrics. Comments, impressions and reactions are LinkedIn's lifetime totals per post. Engagement rate is reactions plus comments plus reposts over impressions, per post, only where a post has at least 100 impressions.

One causal claim is allowed, the other is not. The comment gap is mechanical: lead-magnet posts explicitly ask for comments, so the format causes comments in the plainest sense. The impressions gap is a correlation. Comment-heavy posts plausibly earn distribution from LinkedIn's ranking, but lead-magnet posts here are also written to a proven structure, so part of the gap may be the writing rather than the mechanic. The study keeps those two readings separate throughout.

Within-author check. Pooled format comparisons can launder author differences into format differences. Every account with at least 3 posts of both kinds gets its own comparison; four accounts qualify.

The median lead-magnet post out-commented the median standard post 78.5 to 1. The median standard post earned exactly one comment, which is what most LinkedIn posting looks like everywhere: broadcast, no conversation.

The gaps in the other rows are large but smaller: 3.6x on median impressions, 6.5x on reactions, 3.5x on engagement rate. Comments are where the format's entire design pressure lands, and the data shows exactly that shape.

Consistency check, matured cohort only

Restricting to posts at least 30 days old leaves 118 lead-magnet and 14 standard posts: median comments 94.5 vs 1.5, a 63x multiple against the full series' 78.5x, and median impressions 2,124 vs 249, an 8.5x multiple against the full series' 3.6x. The direction is unchanged on both metrics, so the gap is not an artifact of post age. The comment multiple compresses somewhat as posts mature while the impressions multiple widens.

Does it survive within a single author?

Four accounts of four agree, on both comments and impressions. This is the check that killed a headline in our outreach research, where a pooled acceptance gap reversed inside customers. Here it does the opposite: the strongest and weakest accounts alike see the same direction, which is what a real format effect looks like.

What this means

The comment result is close to definitional and still worth stating with numbers, because 78.5 vs 1 is not a nuance. A lead-magnet post converts an audience into a comment thread; a standard post almost never does. For any workflow built on comments, comment triggers, social proof, or reaching commenters afterwards, the format difference is the whole ballgame.

The impressions result should be read more carefully. Lead-magnet posts came with 3.6x the median reach, and the within-author table shows the pattern is not just strong authors choosing the format. But this study cannot split how much of that is LinkedIn's ranking rewarding early comments versus these posts simply being better constructed. Both stories predict the same table.

What the data does rule out is the cynical version: that lead-magnet posts trade reach for comment-farming. In this dataset the format came with more of everything, including 6.5x the median reactions from readers who were never asked to react.

In practice

A founder posting twice a week with a median of one comment per post is not doing anything wrong; they are matching this dataset's standard-post median exactly. The question this data puts to them is whether they want a comment thread, because a format exists whose median here is 78.5.

A content marketer adopting the format should copy the mechanic completely: a concrete resource, a single keyword, and a reason to want it. The 182 posts behind these numbers are not "comment below" engagement bait; each delivers a real asset to each commenter, which is what makes the thread worth having.

And anyone measuring content by impressions alone will undervalue this format's actual output, which is identified, warm people. What those comments turned into is quantified in the companion funnel study.

Limitations

The standard-post group is small. 29 posts total, 14 matured. Its medians are the least stable figures here, and the within-author cells for accounts C and D rest on 3 standard posts each. The direction is consistent everywhere; the exact multiples are not precise.

One team, one niche. All 211 posts are Reachium's own B2B lead-generation content. A lead-magnet post needs an audience that wants assets; the 78.5x figure is this team's, not a law.

Format assignment is by trigger attachment. A post written like a lead magnet but published without a trigger counts as standard. We found no such posts in review, but the classification is operational, not editorial.

Comment counts include every comment, including the author's own replies in the thread and repeat comments, as LinkedIn counts them. That inflates lead-magnet comment totals relative to unique commenters; the companion funnel study reports unique commenters (6,012 across the trigger posts).

Selection into the format was not random. The team chose when to use each format. Within-author consistency limits the damage but does not eliminate it, and no randomised test was run.
